The Light of Hope features six pillars set in a circular configuration around a bronze sculpture of Dr. King. The pillar forms are inspired by Dr. King’s Six Pillars of Nonviolent Resistance and the Ancient Greek Notion of “Agape.” The pillars draw upon the distinctive, stained-glass patterns of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where Dr. King took on his first pastorate. The geometric stained-glass pattern becomes a dynamic matrix for a montage of colorful ceramic ink glass imagery featuring Dr. King’s life and work, interspersed with imagery of his impact and connection to the Civil Rights movement and leadership in Cincinnati. This patchwork or collage-like design is also an homage to African-American traditions of quilt making throughout our nation’s history, as an expression of resourcefulness, creativity, and intergenerational memory.
